Madeline Miller Historical Fantasy Books Editorial Review
Circe by Madeline Miller is a brilliant retelling of the Greek myth of Circe, daughter of the sun god Helios and the nymph Perse. Circe, a witch and demigod, has been marginalized and exiled, but she refuses to be cast aside so easily. The language in this novel is spare and lovely, and Circe herself is a strong and admirable woman who learns to stand up for herself and make choices based on her moral compass. The story unfolds not only Circe's journey, but also the tales of other Greek mythological figures. The universality of the Greek stories emerges from every tale, and Circe becomes a heroic figure to be revered and remembered. Overall, Circe is a moving, engaging, humorous, and deeply human literary work.
